It Must Be Him tells the story of Louie Wexler, a whiz kid comedy writer from the heyday of variety television who is now out of luck and out of new ideas. With his devoted agent and considerably less devoted housekeeper by his side, Louie finds himself broke, lonely and on the wrong side of middle age. Desperate to rekindle his fading career, save his Beverly Hills home, and find the man of his dreams, Louie searches high and low for one last shot at his own real life happy ending. It Must Be Him recently played a five week, off-Broadway run at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater in New York City.

LOUIE:
Jewish, mid 50s. Gay. A Los Angeles writer, working on an autobiographical screenplay. A worrier. Mildy neurotic and needy, but charming and sweet. His career has been stalled for years. A grown-up with a kid’s personality. Very, very funny. Needs to carry a tune. Lead.
ROSS:
Late 40s – late 50s. Louie’s agent. Loyal to Louie. He is focused, and gets things done; decisive, and frustrated by Louie’s lack of direction. Could be out of shape, slightly chubby. Lead.
ANA:
Latina, 40s – 50s. Louie’s housekeeper. Has worked for him forever, and totally understands him but hardly a word of English. Outrageously funny, and often politically incorrect. Needs to carry a tune. Lead.
LEO:
40s – late 50s. Louie’s dead father. Younger than you would expect, because we (the audience) see him as Louie remembers him. Funny.
ROSE:
40s – late 50s. Louie’s dead mother. Younger than you would expect, because we (the audience) see her as Louie remembers her. Funny.
SCOTT:
Mid 20s. Midwestern all-American looks. Hunky, sexy. Louie’s housemate. He wants to be an actor. Louie wants him to be his lover. In the reading of the screenplay Louie is writing, Scott also plays “Kevin”, a waiter and also a few bit parts throughout. Scott sings in the Broadway musical version of Louie’s screenplay, and plays “Kirk” in the reality TV version of the screenplay. Sings.
MYLES:
Mid 30s. Louie’s assistant. One of those dudes with a hip vocabulary. In his own world and on his own time schedule. Too old to be a guy-Friday and too irresponsible. A kook.
TY:
Middle-aged (mid 30s – late 50s). Flamboyant gay actor. A mess, complete with toupee. In the reading of Louie’s screenplay, Ty overplays a character named “Joe”, based on Louie. Ty sings in the musical version of Louie’s screenplay and plays the “Emcee” in the reality TV version of Louie’s story. Sings.
MARK / RICK / EDDIE / ELIGIBLE BACHELOR #1:
Multiple-role track for one actor. Must sing and dance. Male, 20s – 40s. Mark: Louie’s straight and married brother. Doesn’t understand Louie’s life. Eddie: Louie’s tough bookie. Rick: An actor with a stutter. He also plays Scott’s boyfriend, a nelly dancer and a gardener. Needless to say, very funny and versatile.
JOAN / LIZ / HILDY:
Multiple-role track for one actor. Female, 30s – 50. Joan: Louie’s first high school girlfriend. Could be chubby. Liz: A pretentious actress. Liz plays “Ana” in Louie’s screenplay reading, and sings in the musical version. Hildy: is a pushy Beverly Hills Real estate broker. Also very versatile.
